Disability Compensation
A monthly, tax-free payment for Veterans with a disability connected to their military service — whether it began in service, was made worse by service, or is presumed connected (such as PACT Act conditions). Your payment is based on your combined rating and your dependents.

Dependency & Indemnity Compensation (DIC)
A monthly, tax-free payment for eligible surviving spouses, children, and parents of a Veteran who died from a service-connected condition.
A surviving spouse or child may ALSO qualify under 38 U.S.C. § 1318 even when the Veteran died of something completely unrelated — a heart attack, a car accident, cancer that was never service connected — if the Veteran was rated totally disabling for:
- 10 years or more immediately before death, or
- 5 years from the date of discharge, or
- 1 year before death, if the Veteran was a former prisoner of war.
